MLB Run Line Betting Guide

Unlike football, baseball doesn't use a traditional point spread. Instead it uses the run line — almost always set at ±1.5 runs. This creates a different risk/reward profile that can offer real value.

What Is the Run Line?

The run line is baseball's version of a point spread. Unlike football or basketball, the spread in MLB is almost always fixed at ±1.5 runs. The favorite must win by 2+ runs; the underdog can lose by 1 and still cover.

Example: Yankees -1.5 (-130) vs. Rays +1.5 (+110)
→ Yankees must win by 2+. Rays cover if they win OR lose by exactly 1.

Run Line vs. Moneyline

The run line changes both the risk and the payout compared to the moneyline. Here's how they compare for the same game:

Yankees moneyline-180
Yankees run line -1.5-130
Rays moneyline+155
Rays run line +1.5+110

Taking the Yankees on the run line costs less (-130 vs -180) because you're now requiring them to win by 2. Taking the Rays on the run line pays less (+110 vs +155) because you're giving them the 1.5-run cushion.

When to Use the Run Line

Bet the run line favorite when:

  • A dominant ace is starting (higher strikeout, lower blowout potential)
  • The opponent's bullpen is exhausted from recent games
  • The moneyline price (-200+) is too steep to justify the risk
  • Historical data shows the team wins by 2+ more often than the market implies

Bet the run line underdog (+1.5) when:

  • You expect a close game regardless of who wins
  • You like the team but not at a price better than even
  • The starting pitching matchup is very close

The First 5 Innings Run Line

Many sportsbooks also offer a F5 run line — the spread applies only to the first 5 innings. This isolates starting pitcher performance and removes bullpen variance, making it useful when you have a strong view on the starting pitching matchup.

Run Line Pushes

At ±1.5 runs, a push is mathematically impossible — no game ends in a half-run margin. However some books offer alternate run lines at ±1 or ±2, where pushes can occur if the final margin hits exactly that number.
