MLB Parlay Betting: The Real Math

Parlays promise big payouts from small stakes — that's why sportsbooks promote them harder than any other bet. This guide shows the actual math behind MLB parlays and why straight bets build bankrolls while parlays drain them.

How a Parlay Works

A parlay combines multiple bets ("legs") into one ticket. Every leg must win. One loss — even by half a run at 11:40 PM — kills the whole ticket. In exchange, the payout multiplies.

Leg 1: Yankees ML-150
Leg 2: Dodgers ML-140
Leg 3: Braves ML-160
3-leg parlay pays≈ +471

The Math Books Don't Advertise

Each leg carries the sportsbook's margin (the vig). A parlay doesn't dilute that margin — it multiplies it. Using the example above:

True win probability (all 3 legs hit)≈ 20.4%
Payout of +471 implies17.5%
House edge on this parlay≈ 3× a single bet

The more legs, the worse it gets. A typical 5-leg moneyline parlay carries a house edge of 15–20% — lottery-ticket territory. This is why every sportsbook app pushes "same game parlays" with flashy graphics: it's their highest-margin product.

Win Rate Reality Check

Say you're a genuinely good bettor who wins 55% of picks at -110 (long-term profitable). Your parlay success rates:

2-leg parlay30.3% hit rate
3-leg parlay16.6% hit rate
4-leg parlay9.2% hit rate
5-leg parlay5.0% hit rate

Even with a real edge on every single leg, you'll lose 19 of every 20 five-leg parlays. Most bankrolls don't survive the drought between hits.

Is a Parlay Ever Acceptable?

  • Entertainment stakes — a 0.1u parlay for sweat on a Saturday slate won't hurt anyone. Just book it mentally as entertainment, not investment.
  • Genuinely correlated legs — e.g., an ace pitcher's team ML + under. Books ban or reprice most true correlations, but loose ones slip through occasionally.
  • Never as a way to "boost" small bankrolls — that's the exact trap the product is designed to be.

What Builds Bankrolls Instead

Flat-staked straight bets with a real edge, tracked honestly in units. It's boring, and it works. Our own record — every pick, price, and profit/loss — is public on the results page, all straight bets sized by bankroll units.

Skip the parlay traps. Get flat-staked, single-game picks with the analysis shown for every selection.
