Closing Line Value (CLV) Explained

Win rate over a month is mostly luck. Closing Line Value is not. CLV measures whether you consistently beat the market's final, sharpest price — and it's the single best predictor of long-term betting profit.

What Is Closing Line Value?

CLV is the difference between the odds you bet and the odds at first pitch (the "closing line"). Beat the close consistently and you're beating the market's sharpest number.

Example: You bet the Tigers at -130 at noon. By first pitch, sharp money has pushed them to -150.
→ You got a better price than the final market. That's positive CLV.

Why the Closing Line Is Special

The closing line is the most accurate prediction in sports betting, period. It contains every injury report, lineup card, weather update, and — most importantly — every sharp bet placed all day. Academic studies and decades of sharp betting practice agree: the closing line beats every public prediction model.

So if your bets consistently get better prices than the close, you are consistently smarter than the final market — even before results come in.

How to Calculate CLV

Convert both prices to implied probability and take the difference:

Your price: -13056.5% implied
Closing price: -15060.0% implied
CLV+3.5%

A bettor averaging +2% CLV or better over hundreds of bets is almost certainly profitable long-term, regardless of what any 20-bet stretch looks like.

Why CLV Beats Win Rate as a Skill Metric

Over a month, win rate is dominated by luck — 17 graded picks can swing wildly either way. CLV stabilizes much faster because every bet produces a CLV data point against an objective benchmark, win or lose.

  • Hot streak + negative CLV → running lucky; regression is coming
  • Cold streak + positive CLV → running unlucky; results will follow the edge
  • Positive record + positive CLV → real, sustainable edge

Use CLV to Vet Any Picks Service

Every tout advertises a hot win rate. Almost none publish their CLV — because it can't be cherry-picked, streak-farmed, or faked with heavy favorites. If a service won't show you the odds at bet time versus close for every pick, assume the worst.

Our answer: the results page shows pick odds, closing odds, and CLV for every graded pick — plus the running average. We also track intraday line movement so you can see the market shift as it happens.

Judge us the way sharps judge themselves — check the CLV column on every pick we've ever graded.
